Heather McNamara sat on her couch with her parents watching Heather Duke on television taking about the suicide of Heather Chandler, their best friend. More of Heather McNamara's best friend. Heather Duke seemed to show no remorse for her death, and she was just happy to be on TV.
Her mother slowly rubbed her back attempting to comfort with, sadly to no avail. "I'm sorry sunshine, I know this must be hard for you..." Heather's mother whispered. All Heather could do was let out a whimper, trying not have a panic attack. Trying not to cry.
Heather's father gave her a kiss to her temple, again, trying to comfort his daughter. Again, to no avail.
"She was my best friend forever......why didn't she tell me she was having issues?" Heather cried in a near whisper. The Heather Chandler she knew had it all together, they grew up together, she was Heather's best friend, she knew everything about her, why didn't Heather tell her she was having suicidal thoughts?
"I don't know, sunshine, I don't know." Heather's mother said in a low tone.
The McNamaras invited the Chandlers over for dinner and to stay with them, they were probably having the hardest time with it all. All throughout dinner Mr. and Mrs. Chandler were attempting to keep it together, which didn't seem to happen, attempting to drink away their pain and through the whole time they tried to ask Heather how she was. Which Heather didn't want to talk about honestly.
"Heather was always such a happy girl, she had good friends, I can't believe she'd do this.." Mrs. Chandler would cry after finishing her wine.
"Heather was smiling and laughing, we made sure she was happy." Mr. Chandler muttered. He looked down at his plate, attempting not to think of the death of his only child.
"She was a lovely girl, Rachel, our Heather made sure she was happy, we are so glad she was their for her while she could." Heather McNamara's mother comforted the grieving Chandlers.
Why couldn't dinner be over?
Later that night after the Chandlers left for their home, Heather called her boyfriend, Kurt Kelly. She needed comfort, maybe her boyfriend could provide it.
She dialed his phone number in the house phone.
"Hello, is this Kurt Kelly?" Heather asked through constant tears.
"No, this is Kurt's mother, wait, Heather McNamara? Are you okay darling? I'll put Kurt on the phone...." Mrs. Kelly heard Heather's tears and could immediately tell what was going on. She heard Heather whimper and mumble and she could tell she wanted to talk to her boyfriend.
After about thirty seconds, Kurt's mother was back on the phone. "Sorry darling, Kurt is at practice, I totally forgot. Would you like to talk, darling? Or how about when Kurt gets back I'll put him on the phone for you?".
"Thank you, Mrs. Kelly. But no thank you....but when Kurt gets home will you have him call me?" Heather replied.
"Of course darling, anything you need." Mrs. Kelly responded in a comforting tone.
Heather hung up the phone and immediately dialed another number. The number of Veronica Sawyer. The number of the girl who was one of her best friends. She started to cry again.
"Hello?" A voice answered the phone. Just the girl Heather wanted to talk to.
"Ronny, I...I need you. Please.....can I talk to you?" Heather'a voice was shaky. The room seemed to slip from under her feet.
On the other end, Veronica's eyes went wide, she never heard Heather fucking McNamara sound so helpless. So scared, so needy. Veronica slightly had feelings for this girl (okay that was a lie, she had HUGE feelings for this girl), and now her crush was on the phone needing her, was this a blessing or a curse?
"Heather, what's wrong?" Veronica asked panicked. "Are you hurt, are you okay?".
"Ronny, can you come over......please? I'll ask my parents, they won't care.....please?" Heather's voice sounded even shakier.
Veronica immediately responded. "Of course, I'll be over in a minute, my parents won't mind. Please Heather, stay where you are...."
Heather and Veronica both asked their parents, both getting the response of yes, and in a matter of minutes Veronica was over at the McNamaras.
Veronica ringing the doorbell, jumpy and fidgety as ever. The door opened.
"Are you Veronica Sawyer?" It was Mrs. McNamara at the door.
"Yes ma'am. Can I please come in?" Veronica asked.
"Of course darling, thank you so much. Heather's room is upstairs." Mrs. McNamara looked upstairs for a minute. "Sunshine, your friend is here.".
"Sunshine, that's an adorable name!" Veronica thought to herself.
Veronica nearly flew upstairs to Heather's room. What she saw broke her heart in two.
In her room, bundled up on the floor, was Heather McNamara. Her face wet with tears, she was shaking near violently, and was wearing a light yellow tank top and short cheer shorts.
Heather looked up to see Veronica looking heartbroken. "Ronny......." she said weakly.
Veronica ran to Heather's side and bundled her up in her arms, cradling her. Veronica started stroking her best friend's curly blonde hair and at the same time holding her back attempting to pull her closer to her. Heather's hands were positioned near Veronica's chest, attempting not to cop a feel, but still wanting comfort.
Veronica started to shush Heather while stroking her hair. "Heather....." she whispered.
"She was my best friend forever, Ronny......why didn't she tell me she was having issues?" Heather asked in tears, she was shaking violently. "WHY DIDN'T SHE TELL ME?!". Heather's hands trying to grab on to Veronica's gray sweater, which only came out to be a weak hold on her.
Veronica didn't think it was possible, but her heart broke again. Feeling Heather McNamara, the untouchable queen of Westerberg High School, her crush, the sunshine of Sherwood Ohio, trying to grab on to her sweater, in tears, on the verge of having a panic attack.
"Shhh......I don't know Heather, but please, relax. Heather is in a better place, Heather is happy." Veronica felt horrible, she helped kill Heather Chandler. She felt Heather Chandler's presence. It was a sad presence.
"I'm sorry, Heather....." the ghost of Heather Chandler was crying. Was Veronica going crazy?
"Why is Duke being such a straight up bitch?! She doesn't even CARE Heather is dead....why doesn't she care?" Heather cried.
Veronica remembered that morning, Heather Duke slapped Heather McNamara straight across her face and told her to shut up the fuck up. She told Heather to stop whining like she always did. To get over her best friend's death. Veronica never wanted to kill someone so bad, she could tell JD was even pissed at Heather Duke for doing this to McNamara.
"I don't know, sunshine..." Veronica caught herself calling Heather "sunshine". Heather looked up.
"Ronny....can you stay the night.....I need you right now.....Kurt is at practice, I don't know when he will be home......my boyfriend isn't even their for me.....please?" Heather asked quietly.
Veronica gulped. Her crush was asking her to stay the night, this was a BLESSING. "Of course, Heather."
Three minutes passed, one phone call was made, and Veronica was good to stay the night. After about three minutes, Veronica was changed into Mrs. McNamara's spare pajamas.
And after five minutes, Heather was back into Veronica's arms. Except this time, they were lying on Heather's bed together.
Heather McNamara was still crying, and Veronica was still trying to cheer up her best friend. She kept on stroking her curly hair, trying to keep her relaxed.
"I'm sorry Heather....." Veronica said.
"She was my best friend....." Heather mumbled, and with that, Heather McNamara fell asleep in Veronica's arms into a dreamless sleep.
Veronica looked at her best friend who fell asleep in her arms. She was mad at Heather Duke for everything she did. She was mad at JD for killing Heather Chandler. She was mad at Kurt for not being their for his girlfriend when she needed it. And most of all she was mad at herself for helping kill Heather Chandler.
She looked across Heather's room to see Heather Chandler's ghost in tears.
"I'm sorry Heather, I'm so so so sorry. Sawyer, I swear to fucking God, if you don't protect her you are DEAD. She is my best friend......I'll do anything for her." Heather Chandler growled before finally fading away.
Veronica sighed looking at the tiny cheerleader sleeping in her arms. She took a deep breath in, trying to keep her heartbeat down, for Heather's sake, and fell into a deep sleep.
She's my best friend, I'll do anything for her.....
